ptr-8 encodes a nematode-specific member of the sterol sensing domain (SSD) proteins, distantly paralogous to Drosophila PATCHED (PTC) and human PTCH (OMIM:601309, mutated in basal cell nevus syndrome); PTR-8 is weakly required for normal molting from L4 to adult stages; PTR-8 is also required for normal growth to full size and locomotion; PTR-8 is expressed in hypodermis.
