mat-2 encodes a subunit of the anaphase-promoting complex or cyclosome (APCC) which is a multi-subunit E3 ubiquitin ligase that targets proteins for degradation during the metaphase-to-anaphase transition of the cell cycle; mat-2 is required for chromosome segregation during meiosis I and is involved in polarity specification of the anterior/posterior axis in the developing embryo.
