ubc-22 encodes an E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme orthologous to Saccharomyces cerevisiae UBC8 and human UBC1/HIP2 (Huntingtin interacting protein 2, OMIM:602846) which are involved in regulating fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase and huntingtin catabolism, respectively; by homology, UBC-22 is likely required for covalent attachment of ubiquitin to select target proteins to facilitate their degradation; however, as loss of UBC-22 activity via RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) does not result in any abnormalities, the precise role of UBC-22 in C. elegans development and/or behavior is not yet known.
