lab-1 encodes a protein containing a motif associated with binding, localization, and function of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1/Glc7); LAB-1 activity is required for establishment and maintenance of sister chromatid cohesion during meiosis; LAB-1 physically interacts with the protein phosphatases GSP-1 and GSP-2 and positively regulates the localization of GSP-2 to early meiotic nuclei; in addition, LAB-1 negatively regulates AIR-2 localization to early meiotic nuclei; LAB-1 localizes to condensed chromosomes in the germ line.
