ahcy-1 encodes the C. elegans S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase (SAHH) ortholog; by homology, AHCY-1 is predicted to catalyze the hydrolysis of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine to adenosine and L-homocysteine; loss of ahcy-1 activity via RNAi results in embryonic and larval lethality, abnormal body morphology, sick animals, and uncoordinated locomotion; Northern blot analyses indicate the ahcy-1 mRNA is expressed in very high abundance.
