Caenorhabditis elegans

SEA-1

CELE_F19B10.9, tbx-18, F19B10.9
sea-1 encodes a T-box transcription factor; during development, sea-1 functions, zygotically and in a dose-dependent manner, as an autosomal element of the X:A (X chromosome:autosome) ratio that determines C. elegans sex; in opposition to the X signal elements, SEA-1 positively regulates transcription of xol-1, the master sex-determination switch gene that is essential for male development and for setting the proper activity level of the dosage compensation complex; consistent with its role as a regulator of sex determination, SEA-1 is expressed in nuclei of early embryos from approximately the 20- to 100-cell stage of embryogenesis.
