ppp-1 encodes the C. elegans ortholog of the gamma subunit of translation initiation factor eIF2B, the guanine-nucleotide-exchange factor for translation initiation factor 2 (eIF2); loss of ppp-1 activity via RNAi in a wild-type background results in embryonic and larval lethality, as well as reduced brood sizes and adult sterility, while loss of ppp-1 activity in mutant backgrounds results in a similar range of phenotypes and additionally in defects in gene expression, RNAi, and receptor-mediated endocytosis.
