ppk-3 encodes a phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinase 3 (PPK-3) and the ortholog of yeast and mammalian PIKfyve/Fab1p; ppk-3 is required for the proper maturation of lysosomes and the production of phosphatidylinositol-3,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns(3,5)P2) from phosphatidylinositol 3-monophosphate; ppk-3 is also required for embryonic viability and normal growth and development; ppk-3 functions mainly to mediate membrane retrieval from matured lysosomes; ppk-3 localizes mostly to the cytoplasm in neurons and in the intestine.
