The metabolism of valine to isobutyl alcohol in yeast was examined by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The product of valine transamination, alpha-ketoisovalerate, had four potential routes to isobutyl alcohol.
