Phenotypic Enhancement

A genetic interaction is inferred when mutation or overexpression of one gene results in enhancement of any phenotype (other than lethality/growth defect) associated with mutation or over expression of another gene.

An investigation of the metabolism of valine to isobutyl alcohol in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Dickinson JR, Harrison SJ, Hewlins MJ

The metabolism of valine to isobutyl alcohol in yeast was examined by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The product of valine transamination, alpha-ketoisovalerate, had four potential routes to isobutyl alcohol. The first, via branched-chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase to isobutyryl-CoA is not required for the synthesis of isobutyl alcohol because abolition of branched-chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase activity in ... Synthetic Lethality

A genetic interaction is inferred when mutations or deletions in separate genes, each of which alone causes a minimal phenotype, result in lethality when combined in the same cell under a given condition.
