Synthetic Lethality

A genetic interaction is inferred when mutations or deletions in separate genes, each of which alone causes a minimal phenotype, result in lethality when combined in the same cell under a given condition.

The severe slow growth of Deltasrs2 Deltarqh1 in Schizosaccharomyces pombe is suppressed by loss of recombination and checkpoint genes.

Maftahi M, Hope JC, Delgado-Cruzata L, Han CS, Freyer GA

Our interest in the Schizosaccharomyces pombe RecQ helicase, rqh1+, led us to investigate the function of a related putative DNA helicase, srs2+. We identified the srs2+ homolog in S.pombe, and found that srs2+ is not essential for cell viability. A Deltasrs2 Deltarqh1 double mutant grows extremely slowly with aberrant shaped cells and low viability. This slow growth does not appear ... [more]
