Synthetic Lethality

A genetic interaction is inferred when mutations or deletions in separate genes, each of which alone causes a minimal phenotype, result in lethality when combined in the same cell under a given condition.

Genetic analysis of 20 sterile mutants prone to form hyphae revealed 11 novel ste genes (sep6 to sep16) of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. None of the mutants was completely mycelial.
