High-molecular-weight hyaluronan, a major component of the extracellular matrix, is anti-oncogenic, whereas low-molecular-weight hyaluronan is pro-oncogenic, though the mechanisms underlying the size-dependent opposite bioactivities of hyaluronan remain uncertain.
