The midnolin-proteasome pathway catches proteins for ubiquitination-independent degradation.
Cells use ubiquitin to mark proteins for proteasomal degradation. Although the proteasome also eliminates proteins that are not ubiquitinated, how this occurs mechanistically is unclear.
