Synthetic Growth Defect
A genetic interaction is inferred when mutations in separate genes, each of which alone causes a minimal phenotype, result in a significant growth defect under a given condition when combined in the same cell.

Mek1 kinase governs outcomes of meiotic recombination and the checkpoint response.
Homologous recombination promotes proper segregation of chromosomes during meiosis. Programmed double-strand breaks (DSBs) initiate recombination and are repaired preferentially using the homolog rather than the sister chromatid template. In yeast, activation of Mek1 kinase upholds this bias. Mek1 is also a proposed effector kinase in the recombination checkpoint that responds to aberrant DNA and/or axis structures. Elucidating a role for ... [more]

Ontology Terms
- phenotype: protein/peptide accumulation (APO:0000149)
- phenotype: chromosome/plasmid maintenance (APO:0000143)
- phenotype: vegetative growth (APO:0000106)
Additional Notes
- double mutants show reduced levels of various proteins, fast progression through mitosis and decreased crossover products during DNA replication
