Inactivation of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor is associated with renal carcinoma, hemangioblastoma and pheochromocytoma. The VHL protein is a component of a ubiquitin ligase complex that ubiquitinates and degrades hypoxia inducible factor-α (HIF-α).
