RIM11

GSK3, MDS1, serine/threonine protein kinase RIM11, L000001056, YMR139W
Protein kinase; required for signal transduction during entry into meiosis; promotes the formation of the Ime1p-Ume6p complex by phosphorylating Ime1p and Ume6p; shares similarity with mammalian glycogen synthase kinase 3-beta; protein abundance increases in response to DNA replication stress; RIM11 has a paralog, MRK1, that arose from the whole genome duplication

YGK3

serine/threonine protein kinase YGK3, YOL128C
Protein kinase related to mammalian GSK-3 glycogen synthase kinases; GSK-3 homologs (Mck1p, Rim11p, Mrk1p, Ygk3p) are involved in control of Msn2p-dependent transcription of stress responsive genes and in protein degradation; YGK3 has a paralog, MCK1, that arose from the whole genome duplication

Synthetic Growth Defect

A genetic interaction is inferred when mutations in separate genes, each of which alone causes a minimal phenotype, result in a significant growth defect under a given condition when combined in the same cell.

Yeast glycogen synthase kinase-3 activates Msn2p-dependent transcription of stress responsive genes.

Hirata Y, Andoh T, Asahara T, Kikuchi A

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has four genes, MCK1, MDS1 (RIM11), MRK1, and YOL128c, that encode homologues of mammalian glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3). A gsk-3 null mutant in which these four genes are disrupted showed growth defects on galactose medium. We isolated several multicopy suppressors of this growth defect. Two of them encoded Msn2p and phosphoglucomutase (PGM). Msn2p is a ... [more]
