ubc-1 encodes an E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme that contains a novel 40 amino acid C-terminal tail, and is homologous to Saccharomyces cerevisiae RAD6/UBC2 which is involved in DNA repair; although loss of UBC-1 activity via RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) does not result in any abnormalities, UBC-1 is able to complement the DNA repair defects of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae rad6 null mutant, suggesting that UBC-1 can function in the DNA repair pathway; ubc-1 mRNA is detectable in embryos.

To initiate studies on how protein-protein interaction (or "interactome") networks relate to multicellular functions, we have mapped a large fraction of the Caenorhabditis elegans interactome network. Starting with a subset of metazoan-specific proteins, more than 4000 interactions were identified from high-throughput, yeast two-hybrid (HT=Y2H) screens. An interaction is inferred between proteins in vitro. This can include proteins in recombinant form or proteins isolated directly from cells with recombinant or purified bait. For example, GST pull-down assays where a GST-tagged protein is first isolated and then used to fish interactors from cell lysates are considered reconstituted complexes (e.g. PUBMED: 14657240, Fig. 4A or PUBMED: 14761940, Fig. 5). This can also include gel-shifts, surface plasmon resonance, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and bio-layer interferometry (BLI) experiments. The bait-hit directionality may not be clear for 2 interacting proteins. In these cases the directionality is up to the discretion of the curator.
