Synthetic Growth Defect
A genetic interaction is inferred when mutations in separate genes, each of which alone causes a minimal phenotype, result in a significant growth defect under a given condition when combined in the same cell.

POG1, a novel yeast gene, promotes recovery from pheromone arrest via the G1 cyclin CLN2.
In the absence of a successful mating, pheromone-arrested Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells reenter the mitotic cycle through a recovery process that involves downregulation of the mating mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade. We have isolated a novel gene, POG1, whose promotion of recovery parallels that of the MAPK phosphatase Msg5. POG1 confers alpha-factor resistance when overexpressed and enhances alpha-factor sensitivity when deleted ... [more]
